Artemis in “normal clothes” Artemis: Requiem #4

Note
Since you’re a Ditemis fan, would you know if Artemis: Requiem is available at all in a trade paperback or hardcover? It’s just easier for me than reading it issue by issue or online. Also, don’t know if you knew but in Diana’s “perfect world” (some Dark Crisis shenanigans I think), she wanted to be embraced by Artemis? It looked like a tackle to the ground hug but we both know it’s because DC wouldn’t let them kiss (outside of Elseworlds.)
Chikibeibi, I'm probably the least appropriate person to ask for buying advices 😢 we barely receive comics in stores in my country, and buying online is extremely expensive in my coin. When I was 11 years old I printed all the six issues of Artemis Requiem on my own and it's still in my bookshelf. I have no idea where you can buy 90's comics nowadays.
And yeah I found out about that story and went to read it immediately! Their bickering is a classic, but Diana has always had this soft spot for Artemis that made me ship them from my childhood until now.
Diana literally said 'fuck the natural order of the universe I'm going to resurrect my emotional support Artemis'. And then Artemis is. Like. She has to decide whether to go back to life with Diana or not and she's like 'okay I have everything I ever wanted in this afterlife, food, hot water, a lot of violence and more food...' and she throws it all out the window to get back to Diana.
They can be extremely soft for each other when DC isn't rebooting their universe every few years. Can't wait for their next meeting.

Artemis: Requiem
Got a re-draw of Ed Benes' Artemis: Requiem #1 cover! I hope to print it, so I drew it in CYMK and god I hate using that XD It better be worth it!
Below is a textless version, and also the original cover:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Design decisions:
Her pose is changed, because I wanted to focus on her physically pulling and pushing herself up
Her hair is less long
I put her in the outfit she died in, because in my mind it's just a snap-shot right after she was revived, so her being in her Requiem outfit already didn't make sense.

You know how while Wonder Woman Artemis never gets the chance to save a woman (or anyone but women are more thematically important in terms of Amazon philosophy and history here) in a way that wasn't just like a total farce with fake villains etc. and she never learned the truth about that before her death. But then the FIRST thing she does after being resurrected is save the life of the night watch(wo)man of the cemetery and then go on to not just save her, but advocate for her and her future? Yeah.

✨ Wisdomverse x Smash ✨
< Prev | 15 | Next >
Masterpost
It’s time.
I finally get to talk about Smash and the Zeldas :).
How this wacky little fighting game series represents the LoZ gals and influences them in Wisdomverse— explained under the cut!
Exactly four Zeldas make an appearance as playable characters in the Smash Brothers franchise, spanning different games and decades.
[OoT] Lullaby: Melee (Zelda and Sheik), Smash4 (Sheik), Ultimate (Sheik)
[TP] Dusk: Brawl (Zelda and also Sheik somehow), Smash4
[ALttP/ALBW] Fable: Ultimate
[ST] Phantom (a special case): Smash4, Ultimate
Funnily enough, there have also been four Links in Smash, although they’re not quite from the same games as the Zeldas.
[OoT/MM] Time: SSB64 (Adult), Melee (Adult and Young), Brawl (Young), Ultimate (Young)
[TP] Twilight: Brawl, Smash4
[BotW/TotK] Wild: Ultimate
[WW/PH] Wind: Brawl, Smash4, Ultimate
Now, Smash is just about as non-canon a game as Hyrule Warriors— and we all accept Wars and Artemis. And some Zeldas arguably have more of a chance to display their skills in Smash than in their own games.
Therefore, I’ve peripherally incorporated Smash into Wisdomverse:
Characters who have met each other in Smash will sometimes recognize each other from there, as if they’ve met in a vague dream. They may also forget. Such is the ephemeral world of Smash to its players.
To keep things fair, Smash connections and story will not be relevant to the plot of Wisdomverse.
Each mainline Smash Zelda also gets one of the three Golden Goddess skills from their Smash moveset to use in Wisdomverse, based on their personality and events from their actual games.
Charismatic, dramatic Fable gets to blow things up with Din’s Fire — like how Fable and the sages blast through Ganon’s barrier in ALttP
Steady, calculating Dusk gets to defend against attacks with Nayru’s Love — reminiscent of the twilight pyramid encasing her in Hyrule Castle in Twilight Princess
Quiet, stealthy Lullaby gets to teleport short distances with Farore’s Wind — like how Sheik (technically Requiem, not Lullaby) vanishes ninja-style in Ocarina of Time
And there you have it! Rebalancing the Zeldas, one skillset at a time :).
Extra:
For the truly dedicated folks, here’s a further analysis of interesting (and intentional on the part of the devs) Smash x Zelda facts:
Despite clearly looking like Dusk and not Lullaby, Brawl Zelda is able to turn into Sheik in both the plot of Subspace Emissary and in battle in Brawl. She loses this ability and goes back to normal in Smash4.
Despite clearly looking like Twilight, Brawl Link is shown with Navi in Subspace Emissary.
Wind is clearly Wind, and not Spirit, because he has the Wind Waker as a taunt in all three Smash games he shows up in.
Wind uses some of Legend’s attacks. And some of Time’s attacks. Wind is a dirty rotten move stealer (affectionate).
Phantom isn’t technically playable, but both Fable and Dusk summon a phantom to fight alongside them, and neither of them have seen a phantom in any of their games. Also, while their phantom summoning skill is recharging, they have a purple glow around their hand. Therefore, I’m inclined to believe they’re literally summoning Spirit Tracks Zelda (Phantom), like Robin summoning Chrom for his Final Smash, and you technically control her, so close enough.
In Melee, Young Link is clearly from MM, while Link is from OoT. This means Young Link is older than Link (just Time things).

It's immensely frustrating because the more we see of Absolute Wonder Woman, the less excited I am for it. It's a cool idea in theory (witch warrior raised in Hell becomes Wonder Woman), and the art looks fantastic. I just don't see how this is a story we should be seeing with Diana.
Absolute Superman and Absolute Batman are clearly working in conversation with their characters: Absolute Batman is "what if Bruce's parents were killed but he wasn't rich?" and Absolute Superman is yet another "mythos update for the modern era"+"what if Clark wasn't raised by the Kents?" AU. But unlike Bruce (who can reasonably still be recognizably both Bruce and Batman without his money), Clark (who still has Krypton and the experience of growing up as an alien on Earth regardless of where and who he's raised by), and every other Wonderfam character (where if you take away the Amazons, there's still something to build off of), Diana does not and cannot exist without the Amazons...so taking that away from her just makes this feel like a "Diana-in-name-only" story instead of an interesting exploration of what Diana might be like if she'd been raised differently than she was in canon.
It just seems weird that DC has chosen this particular story for the Absolute Universe's Diana when it seems like a story that would be better for, say, a world without Diana as Wonder Woman at all. After all, Absolute Flash is about a teenage Wally becoming Flash in a world without Barry. Absolute Green Lantern is a first contact story starring Jo Mullein. Why are we not getting that for the Wonderfam if DC is intent on talking about a "last Amazon" Wonder Woman who wasn't raised by them?
Why is Absolute Wonder Woman not a story about a world where the Anti-Monitor or Titans of Myth successfully kidnapped Donna and raised her in Hell for Dark Angel purposes, or a world where Circe and Ares let Lyta's Aunt Hecate raise her, or a world where Cassie didn't discover she was a demigoddess until the Amazons had been wiped out, or a world where Child!Yara survives the destruction of the Amazons by virtue of being raised in Idaho Hell, or even a world where Artemis became Queen of Hell long before Requiem? The premise here just doesn't feel like it suits Diana, even an Elseworlds Diana. Maybe I'll be proven wrong. But I'm getting increasingly skeptical the more information we get about it.
